The annual Oscars of Fashion was held, as always, on the first Monday in May. Darlings of the entertainment, sport, fashion and art world flocked to the invite-only, $30,000-ticket Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The themes are always incredible, and the event is a veritable playground for designers and their muses. That was truer than ever this year, with the official theme Camp: Notes on Fashion providing plenty of inspiration.
Every year those who love gizmos and gadgets turn their eyes to the Consumer Electronics Show, where the latest and greatest technology is showcased by the worlds leading electronic companies. Will Facebook ever become aware of just how bad it’s image is at the moment? The social media mega-corporation has made clear its intention of getting into hardware, with a dedicated chat tablet called Portal already unveiled. But, the release of Portal was delayed, due mostly to the enormous backlash it received from early reviewers. Most declared that the device was a neat little gimmick, but drew much more attention to the fact that it had a camera, and this wasn’t exactly what anyone wanted to see, following the earth shattering data theft controversy.
For those unaware, the Britain based company Cambridge Analytica was revealed to have stolen the user data of millions directly from Facebook, and to have funnelled that information into a marketing campaign for none other than President Trump himself. Sentimental value is a truly bizarre notion when you stop to think about. Just about anything can gain value, be it an old mug, a pair of jeans, or even a rock, for no other reason than value has been placed upon it. Not logical value by any means, which is what gives an item the label of being valuable, but only in an illogically perceived sentimental fashion.
This was the assumption when a recent article was published in the Wall Street Journal, drawing attention to a seemingly strange phenomenon. Some men, the article declared, were wearing analogue watches on their wrists. This in itself would not have been strange, but for the fact that the watches were broken, hence making them entirely useless.
