When hearing names like Elon Musk, or Bill Gates, a person probably has distinguished mental images. Elon Musk, after all, is a big name in the tech world, and one would hardly assume there were any silly, embarrassing, or downright laughable things to be said about him. Right?
Wrong. Even big name technology celebrities have a few silly skeletons lurking in the closet. Which is not to say that these people aren’t still giants in the tech world that deserve a little respect. It just helps sometimes to remember that even Elon Musk has done a few silly things in his life too.
Here are little known facts about big technology personalities.
Before we get to Elon Musk, let’s prod Bill Gates for a bit. The man is known to be the multi-millionaire ex-CEO of Microsoft, the biggest software developer in the world. Having built up Microsoft from the ground, and leading into major success, Bill Gates now mostly travels the world and spends his millions leisurely.
But did you know that when he was younger, he wasn’t the sharp-minded businessman he is today? In fact, back in the day he was so strapped for cash that he and a friend attempted to hack an accounting program in order to get free access to the needed software. Or, even better, back in high school he scheduled himself into an all girl English class. It seems young Bill Gates was lonely, but smart enough to skew the odds in his favour.
Want more? How about a college student Bill Gates losing thousands of dollars playing poker with other students. His thousand dollar loss as a student probably hurt him more than if he were to lose a million dollars or more playing casino games today, such is his amassed fortune. But we can guess that at the time, his loss stung a lot!
And now the inventor, innovator, and world class engineer Elon Musk. Known for taking huge leaps forward in the world of technology, Elon Musk has a few stories of his own. Did you know that Elon Musk is a giant comic nerd, and named the robots in his Tesla factory after X-Men? Impossible? True. The robots are named Wolverine, Iceman, Xavier and Colossus. And if you think that’s a bit nerdy, guess what his son is named? Xavier, of course.
Want a little more? Elon Musk is also a giant Star Wars nerd, it turns out, which seems likely after all the X-Men references. His rocket designs are referred to as Falcons. Yes, they are named after the Millennium Falcon, the personal ship of Han Solo.
The CEO of Amazon is another person who surely gets respect. His net worth is enormous, and no one will accuse him of being an underachiever. But yes, we have a few embarrassing little titbits about him as well.
So where to start? How about that Amazon was almost named MakeItSo.com. Why would he possibly name the website that? After the Star Trek quote, of course. Picard uses the phrase repeatedly in Star Trek Next Generation, and so in love was Bezos with the phrase, that Amazon was almost a Star Trek quote.
And lastly, Jeff Bezos may be wealthier than most of us and live in a house that was once a museum, but according to his wife, she still drops him off at work! It does make you wonder if she also packs his lunch, but that may be taking it a step too far. Chances are, she probably orders it from Amazon and has it delivered!
