In most countries people stay up late on New Year’s Eve so that they can usher in the New Year in style. In some places, church bells ring, horns toot, whistles are blown and even sirens shriek. One common feature with these celebrations is the colorful fireworks display.
Here are some of the biggest and fireworks from around the world: (some unrelated to the NYE).
Being the first city to usher in 2017, its natural that the fireworks display is one of the best. The city spends roughly 5 million AUD every year and over a billion view it from all over the world. If you’re in Sydney, you can watch it above the Sydney Opera House, Harbor or the Bridge.
According to sydneynewyearseve.com, the events will kick off at 6:00pm (Australian time) with an aerial display specifically prepared for NYE.
Other activities that have been lined up include, a ceremony that reflects Australia’s respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cleansing the Harbor of bad spirits and eucalyptus smoke is released in the water. They plan to have a 12 minute fireworks display at midnight.
If you are in Dubai this year, be sure to position yourself in a place before midnight with your camera and capture the incredible fireworks display. The carefully synchronized fireworks show is one of the most watched spectacles in the world.
The show will be themed after national pride and its sequence will recreate the design logo of Expo 2020.
Montreal International Fireworks
Also known as the L’International des Feux Loto-Quebec, this fireworks display is the largest pyrotechnics competition of its kind in the world. Companies from around the world come together, showcase their 30-minute display and the winner goes home with the Jupiter award for the best show.
Unlike the other fireworks displays that happen during NYE, this one happens in July and to see them up close you have to pay. However, click here to see which amazing spots you can watch the spectacular display for free.
Thunder Over Louisville
This 28 minute show kicks off the Kentucky Derby Festival or the unofficial beginning of spring. This show in North America has thunderous themes that will leave you with memorable moments. This year’s theme was ‘No Strings Attached’.
According to the festival vice president, the Derby festival is the kind of show “that needs to be field and not just seen and heard”. One of the signatures of this event is the soundtrack that is broadcast from the Waterfront Chow Wagon during the fireworks show.
Palm Jumeirah and World Islands, Dubai
If you thought the Burj Khalifa fireworks display was huge then think again. In 2014, they broke the world record for the largest ever fireworks display when over 400,000 shells were fired in under 7 minutes! They broke the Guinness World record title held by Kuwait by far and it occupied 95km of the seafront.
London’s New Year’s fireworks display is held near the Big Ben and are launched from the London Eye. The display is accompanied by choreographed pop music and you can get the best views from Victoria Embankment, the South Bank or the Westminster Bridge.
Rio de Janeiro
Every NYE, merrymakers head to Copacabana for an open-air party as they witness the spectacular fireworks show. Once the clock strikes midnight the beach is illuminated by the beautiful fireworks as the locals throw flowers into the sea, in honor of their local goddess Yemanja and later dance the night away.
Whatever your location, have yourself a happy 2017 filled with new and great opportunities!
